THE CALL TO BECOME A DISCIPLE OF CHRIST

INTRODUCTION

This is a universal call to follow Jesus completely, not just in belief, but in life transformation. It is also a call to bring God's Kingdom into the world, not to live exclusively, but inclusively in the world to proclaim the gospel and the love of Christ. 

 

CONTENT

1.      The call to follow Jesus (Matthew  4:19-20 “Follow Me”}

  • Jesus as Lord and example: Make Jesus the only Lord and example (1 Peter 2:21-22).

  • The process of transformation: Becoming a disciple is a process of change (metamorphosis) of the heart, mind, and attitude to become more like Christ, worked by the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 12:2).

  • Obedience and discipline: Requires perfect obedience, devotion, and faithfulness, allowing Jesus to set our life agenda.

2.      Conditions for becoming an apprentice (Matthew 16:24)

  • Denying oneself: Rejecting carnal desires and selfishness, not for oneself.

  • Bearing the cross: Accepting challenges and suffering as a way of learning and surrendering to God, and not carrying the burden alone.

  • Living in holiness: Living according to the standards of God's word, relying on the power of the Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 7:1, Romans 12:1).

 

CONCLUSION

We are called to leave our selfish lives behind and become faithful followers who are changed, led, served, and sent forth to bring the Kingdom of God into the world (1 Peter 2:9-10).
